Enregistré le 24 février 1969 pour une émission  de Granada Television qui a l'idée de le faire chanter devant un millier de détenus et d'une centaine de policiers. Les discours de Cash sont francs et sincères, salués d'ovations par une foule de prisonniers admiratifs. Avec un répertoire constitué pour l'occasion de hits, de folk songs et de chansons religieuses. Le succés du disque est foudroyant, le seul numéro un de toute la carrière de Johnny Cash . Ce Succès imprévu va provoquer des questions autour du chanteur : a t'il fait de la prison? : La légende de l'ouest est en marche.
